There is a hole in the chair/bed where the speculum and water come from. It is this same hole where all of the waste goes down. There is a view-tube beside you so that you can see everything that passes out of you. What surprised me was that after the initial “movement” (which was pretty standard) there was not that much that actually came out of me. No giant clumps the size of an orange, mostly just the clean water coming out exactly as it came in. After awhile, this made me anxious. Why wasn’t anything happening? Then, I had another smaller movement, but that was it for the length of the procedure. If anything else came out, it wasn’t visible. I had the expectation that something major would be removed and there would be a lot of movement over the course of the treatment. In retrospect, I think that having that expectation was detrimental. It caused me unnecessary anxiety during the process.
For many people with colon related issues, like irritable bowel syndrome and celiac disease, gluten wreaks havoc on the digestive system. Even if you don't have one of these conditions, gluten may still contribute to inflation in your gut and colon. If you don’t want to cut out all grains from your diet, there are some great gluten-free alternatives like quinoa that also contain fiber and colon-friendly nutrients.
In truth, there are very few reported complaints about herbal laxatives when properly used. Problems occur when people dramatically overdose on such products, or more significantly, when manufacturers promote them for inappropriate uses. For example, several years ago, there was an incident in which a healthy young woman in her 30's used a "dieter's tea" product (a senna based drink) to lose weight. She died for no apparent reason, and the doctor's said it must have been the senna in the tea.
Many doctors, nutritionists, and natural health practitioners advocate the benefits of detoxifying and cleansing your colon as a way to improve your overall health and wellbeing. Over time, the large intestine becomes exposed to various toxins that have been gathered through environmental factors, as well as less-than-ideal diets that are packed with refined sugars and meats full of hormones. Because of this, the colon begins to secrete a mucus which then physically traps the toxins within your body. The longer that you are exposed to these toxins, the more chances you have of growing unwell. Colon Cleansers are a great way to help flush the toxins from your system, allowing you to free up the space within your colon to allow the better absorption of nutrients from your food.
As for exorcising dietary demons, any ‘evidence’ is likely to be psychosomatic. The head of Flinders University’s department of human physiology, Professor Simon Brookes, doesn’t dispute that some patients do feel lighter, or cleansed after a good ol’ rinse, but he pins it on a placebo effect. “…there is absolutely no medical evidence that it carries any benefits at all,” says Prof Brookes.
The colon plays a vital role in how your body processes food. As your digestive system breaks down the food you eat, it enters into the colon in a mostly liquid state. The colon performs two significant roles at this stage of the digestive process. First, bacteria in your colon break down the food further. Second, it absorbs additional nutrients and liquid. Leftover food waste is then turned into feces and stored in the descending colon until it is ready to be expelled from the body.
All the toxins that you eat, drink, breathe, and absorb through your skin end up processed by your gastrointestinal system, kidneys, and liver. If they're not forced from your organs as quickly as possible, they can wreak havoc on your body's systems. By releasing stagnant body waste, you reduce the causes and the risk of polyps, cysts and cancerous growths in your colon and gastrointestinal tract.

The real solution to this lies in your microbiome – the colonies of healthy bacteria that protect your health. These good bacteria in your intestines produce neurotransmitters you can use to optimize your digestion and your moods. There are trillions of bacterial cells in your microbiome, but only billions of cells that make up your body. You are outnumbered by the bacteria and other microorganisms that live inside you.
Mohan Garikiparithi got his degree in medicine from Osmania University (University of Health Sciences). He practiced clinical medicine for over a decade before he shifted his focus to the field of health communications. During his active practice he served as the head of the Dept. of Microbiology in a diagnostic centre in India. On a three-year communications program in Germany, Mohan developed a keen interest in German Medicine (Homoeopathy), and other alternative systems of medicine. He now advocates treating different medical conditions without the use of traditional drugs. An ardent squash player, Mohan believes in the importance of fitness and wellness.
In the colon, water is squeezed out and absorbed from food remnants, leaving behind a mixture of non-digestible fibre, bacteria, bile acids and cells that have been scraped off the intestinal wall. If bowel transit time is too slow, bacteria and fungi proliferate and toxins are reabsorbed. A healthy colon eliminates waste within six to 18 hours after every meal this means having two or three bowel movements a day.
