Cascara sagrada appears in the national formularies of most countries, and has been in the United States Pharmacopoeia since 1890. Early plant chemists identified the key active constituents in cascara sagrada bark as aloe-emodin, barbaloin cascarosides A and B, and emodin. These compounds stimulate peristalsis, the vigorous wavelike contractions of the large intestine that keep food moving through the digestive system. When cascara speeds the process up, the body produces a softer, quicker bowel movement because the intestine has had less chance to absorb the liquid from the stool. Several studies have shown that cascara sagrada is effective in easing chronic constipation in elderly people.
There are several foods that are recommended time and time again by nutritionists for those who wish to follow a colon cleanse diet. The first component is usually quite heavy on raw fruits and vegetables. A raw juice diet is thought by many to be one of the best ways to take in as many nutrients as possible. This gives you all the nutrition of the vegetables and fruits, but without pulp and fibers that take time to digest. This gives the colon time to process everything that is being put into it. This can be a good colon cleanse diet as well for anyone who wants to fast, but needs to have some nutrition still.
There is an old saying that “death begins in the colon.” This is an oversimplification, to be sure, but more accurate than not. In fact, the road to health begins with colon detoxing—pretty much no matter what the disease or problem. Unfortunately, most people confine their understanding of the colon detox to its effect on fecal matter. And while it is true that cleansing programs do draw old fecal matter out of the colon, limiting the discussion to this misses the big picture.

Maybe that’s because of the days prior to the flush day has to be well prepared to have succes on the flush day. I therefore have difficulty finding a good protocol for someone with bowel issues/adrenal fatigue (bloating, constipation, gas; all due to adrenal and thyroid issues that cause metabolic and endocrine problems and of course the Peutz Jeghers syndrome)
As for weight loss, the morning after my colonic and saw a 1.5 pound loss—not the 6 pounds I was hoping for, but a positive change. 🙂 Perhaps the greatest effect of the process has been the positive change to my digestive health. A week after my colonic, I left for vacation. Typically I experience irregularity on vacation (with all of the changes to my diet, being in a strange environment, altered sleeping patterns, etc). However, on this vacation, my digestion ran like clockwork! I felt so good the entire time I was away—never bloated or lethargic.
Step one of the best colon cleanse routine will be to either change or rework your diet so that it is more beneficial to your help. Any comprehensive colon cleanse needs to start with a detoxifying diet, allowing you eliminate the foods that place a burden upon your colon, such as those that move more slowly throughout the digestive track. These foods are switched out with other options that are richer in fiber, thus allowing the colon to be more easily cleaned. Some of the fiber-rich foods that you may consider eating as part of your detoxifying diet include:
These “Frankenfoods” are loaded with artificial ingredients that have names you can’t even pronounce. And they’re missing one key ingredient – fiber. So they sit in your gut for days or even weeks, fermenting and rotting instead of digesting and providing nutrients. Constipation, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, bloating and weight gain are just some of the results.
