There has been a great misconception among the public and most medical professionals about how often a normal healthy person should move their bowels. For years, doctors have thought that anywhere between one bowel movement a day and one a week was normal. (Unfortunately, that's probably the norm for the doctors who think that.) However, what we have learned in the holistic community is that it is normal, and necessary, to have one bowel movement a day for each major meal (as opposed to a snack) you ate the day before. If you eat three major meals, you should have three bowel movements the next day. If you don't, you're not alone.
Colon cleanse proponents attribute a variety of health problems to poor colon health. They claim that eating unhealthy foods causes toxins and fat to stick to the walls of your intestines, causing weight gain and poor health. Eating foods with preservatives, additives, artificial dyes, sweeteners and fats causes your colon to build up toxins. The purpose of a colon cleanse is to sweep away these toxic chemicals and eliminate waste to help you lose weight.
When I called to make my appointment I received very basic instructions to avoid eating two hours beforehand so that I wouldn’t be digesting. The first thing I noticed, arriving in the office, was the beautiful, calming environment. Sandra LaMorgese was my colon hydrotherapist and she made me feel incredibly at ease. I filled out a short questionnaire and a little while later, Sandra brought me into the room where my colonic would take place.

A typical colon cleanse involves dietary modification and the use of an herbal supplement. Most cleanse plans last 10 or more days. During the cleanse, a dieter eats small amounts of fruits and vegetables and avoids all processed foods. Taking psyllium husk or bentonite clay helps you move waste through your colon, increasing the frequency of your bowel movements. Incomplete chewing and talking while eating can cause premature swallowing. Our digestive systems are not designed to digest large pieces of food, so putting large pieces in our stomachs can lead to incomplete digestion (aka: digestive discomfort). The digestive process starts with chewing, which naturally churns the food. Chewing also releases digestive enzymes to further aid in the digestive process.
There are many powdered and liquid supplements available that help in cleansing your colon. They include magnesium, enzymes, herbal teas, and laxatives (27). Some of these supplements are to be taken orally, while some need to be taken via the rectum. However, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before taking supplements for colon cleansing.
