In the colon, water is squeezed out and absorbed from food remnants, leaving behind a mixture of non-digestible fibre, bacteria, bile acids and cells that have been scraped off the intestinal wall. If bowel transit time is too slow, bacteria and fungi proliferate and toxins are reabsorbed. A healthy colon eliminates waste within six to 18 hours after every meal this means having two or three bowel movements a day. Periodically (approximately every six months), you will need a strong purifier and intestinal vacuum to help draw old fecal matter off the walls of your colon and out of any bowel pockets and to also draw out poisons, toxins, and heavy metals from your body. Such a formula will also remove over 3,000 known drug residues as well as radioactive residues. This is the colon detoxifier we discussed above.
James, who was enlisted by NSW Health to help devise guidelines after the hepatitis incident, says that despite perceptions instilled by 49-buck daily deals, colonic lavage is an invasive medical procedure. It should be performed in a medically-run clinic by medically-trained practitioners au fait with infection control procedures. Many practitioners, James laments, are not medically trained.
Processed foods typically contain a long list of additives and chemicals used to prolong shelf life and add texture or flavor. Avoid these whenever possible. Increasingly, additives, like emulsifiers, in processed foods have been linked to colon cancer and can cause constipation. The best way to avoid these additives, and other harmful chemicals, is buying certified organic foods that are raw or minimally processed.
The colon is an intricate part of the large intestine. Also called the large bowel, your large intestine connects the small intestine to the anus. The four major components of the large intestine are the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal. The colon is tubular shaped and connects the cecum to the rectum. It has several layers of muscle and fat with a mucous membrane as its inner lining. The “U” shaped colon subdivides into four sections—the ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon. On average, the colon is around five feet long in adults and takes up the majority of space inside the abdominal cavity.[1]

The gut is the basis of our health – it’s the first line of defense against pathogens, it’s where we digest and absorb nutrients and where we house our gut microbes, also known as gut bacteria. Poor gut health is now thought to be strongly linked to a compromised immune system, malnutrition and poor mood regulation, and plays a role in arthritis and obesity, according to a recent review of scientific literature published in the journal BMC Medicine.
Diseases of the digestive system have reached an all-time high in the United States and are still on the rise. In 1985, 60--70 million Americans were affected by digestive disorders.2 Today, it's over 100 million. In fact, digestive diseases are among the leading causes of doctor visits, hospitalizations, and disability in the United States each year. These conditions span a wide spectrum of disorders that affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, as well as obesity and other nutrition-related disorders. In 2004, more than 35 percent of all emergency and outpatient hospital visits--some 100 million, as already mentioned--were associated with a diagnosis of a digestive disease.3 The number two cancer among men and women combined is colorectal cancer, trailing only lung cancer. The incidence of diverticulosis has increased dramatically from just 10 percent of the adult population over the age of 45 who had this disease in 1952 to an astounding "Just about everyone who reaches age 90 has many diverticula" according to the latest home edition of the Merck Manual. 4 In other words, according to the latest medical studies, virtually all American adults will eventually have diverticulosis of the large intestine if they live long enough.
Hi Sharon (and anyone else who reads this), just wondering if you got to visit your physician about your situation? I am curious because I have been researching whether I want to try this colonic or not. I really want to try, but when I read this, it concerned me. I am a relatively healthy person, and have always thought about trying this, but I wonder if a colonic can do harm to those who are healthier with less fecal matter in their intestines or is I am reading too far into this.
A typical colon cleanse involves dietary modification and the use of an herbal supplement. Most cleanse plans last 10 or more days. During the cleanse, a dieter eats small amounts of fruits and vegetables and avoids all processed foods. Taking psyllium husk or bentonite clay helps you move waste through your colon, increasing the frequency of your bowel movements. Foods that cause colon blockages are acid-forming — particularly high-protein diets without enough fiber. This leads to general malaise in the body. The colon's tissue eventually becomes inflamed, reducing its ability to do its job, which is to allow only water, minerals and vitamins to pass into the bloodstream. If yeasts, molds, fungus, bacteria, parasites or fecal material enter the bloodstream and connected tissue, the body's pH will be thrown out of balance.

Super Colon Cleanse is an all-natural colon cleansing made with herbs and probiotics. This product provides gentle internal cleansing while also aiding in the digestive process. Super Colon Cleanse is made with senna leaf powder, psyllium husk powder, L. acidophilus, fennel, and other natural herbs that sweep the colon clean of waste and pathogens.
This depends on your symptoms but generally you should commit to a cleanse once or twice a year, under the care of a health professional. Post-antibiotic treatment is a must, as you need to nourish the gut and replace all of the healthy bacteria that’s been wiped out by antibiotics. After holidays is also a good time to cleanse as alcohol and treat foods wreak havoc on gut bacteria and gut lining. Post-cleanse you should continue to include gut-friendly foods and nutrients as a part of your regular diet.

The high chlorophyll content of green foods (such as alfalfa, wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina, blue-green algae) makes them ideal for colon cleansing. In addition to cleansing, chlorophyll soothes and heals damaged tissue in the digestive tract. It helps the body to obtain more oxygen and draws out toxins. For this reason, chlorophyll is called “the internal deodorant.”

If you are experiencing “brain fog,” depression, anxiety, or mood swings, it could be all in your gut. Up to 95 percent of your body’s neurotransmitters like serotonin are made – and used – in your gut. When you eat processed foods, your body has to use its own nutrient stores just to break that food down, so it causes a net loss in nutrients, with no gain. This process uses up magnesium and potassium, 2 very important nutrients that help your food move through your digestive system. The end results are constipation and nutrient deficiencies.
For a detox diet to truly work, you need to maintain these three key organs by nourishing your body with the right nutrients. Dr. Oz’s 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse is based upon eating certain “detoxifying” foods that will keep these systems running smoothly. The plan couldn’t be simpler to follow so you’re not always focused on what to eat next. You'll need to prepare and eat the following meals and snacks two days in a row. To get ready for the weekend cleanse, print out the complete cleanse shopping list and make a trip to the supermarket. Get the shopping list here.
When you take a probiotic to try to restore the balance and feed your microbiome, a dose much larger than what’s recommended on the bottle is needed to be effective. This is one of the reasons why Flora-Key comes as a powder and not in capsules, to make it easier to reach the doses you need to promote healthy digestion and good moods. Once your microbiome is restored to health, moods are stable, digestion moves smoothly, and because toxins are being eliminated, weight loss becomes much easier.
According to the medical community, it is normal to have a bowel movement anywhere from three times a day, to three times a week.9 Three times a week works out to once every two days. If you produce 2 pounds of fecal matter a day and you only go to the bathroom once every two days, that means -- mathematically speaking -- that you are regularly storing upwards of 4 pounds of fecal matter in your colon…mathematically speaking. Since we're still in the average range for bowel movements, we're talking tens of millions of Americans who regularly store 4 pounds of fecal matter in their colons. Let's drop a pound off that in case we have a rounding error, and we're still at the high end of my assertion that 2--3 pounds of fecal matter being stored in the colon is common.
Aside from juice or vegetable-rich diets, there are other foods that are often included within a colon cleanse diet Whole grains are a good way to bulk up internal waste and help move it out of the system in a quick and efficient manner. This includes brown rice, sprouted wheat, and grains such as amaranth and quinoa that are easy to digest yet provide essential energy. It’s recommended when on a colon cleanse diet to stay away from excessive spices or too many ingredients. Raw, whole foods tend to be the best way to go for purifying and detoxifying your system.
I have been getting about 2 colonics each month for almost 8 years. It started when I had to go to the ER because I hadn’t gone number 2 in 3 weeks. Loooong story short, after following all the doctor’s instructions I still couldn’t go. The doctor said that the next step was surgery. That’s when I got desperate. I was in Las Vegas and went to the same place as the earlier reader (where they give you home made soup at the end). They saved my butt (literally)! I am so grateful that colonics exist for people who can’t go regularly, especially when bowel surgery is a real option. A few tips before getting a colonic would be to avoid anything that gives you gas, take a good probiotic supplement, drink a lot of water, and don’t eat 2 hours prior. While you’re getting the colonic: RELAX and BREATHE, let go of the physical and emotional waste, and remember that what comes out is better out of your body than in. Enjoy!
Piper also suggests snacking on grapes and watermelon throughout the day: "Grapes are great lymphatic cleansers, free radical eliminators, and aid in the removal of heavy metal toxicity, while watermelon hydrates and cleanses the cells, is abundant in vitamin C, a great antioxidant, and aids with preventing breast, prostate, lung, colon, and endometrial cancers."

Slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra) works with the body to draw out impurities and toxins, assisting with the healing of all body parts. It is beneficial for all inflammatory bowel conditions.39 And slippery elm's coating action soothes the irritated tissues of the intestines, colon, and urinary tract, as well as stomach ulcers. The primary chemical constituents of slippery elm are mucilage (galactose), starch, tannins, calcium, vanadium, and zinc.
In a colon regenerator, I recommend you look for a formula that contains all organic herbs such as: Psyllium seeds and husks, Apple pectin, Montmorillonite clay, Activated willow charcoal, Pau d'arco, Slippery elm inner bark, Marshmallow root, and Fennel seed. Each offers a unique benefit to the colon detox program as well as an overall effectiveness not available in a colonic. These are the ingredients that I use in my own colon regeneration formula. Let's look at them in a little more detail.
Pau d'arco (Tabebuia heptophylla) comes from the rain forests of Brazil and other areas of South America. The active component is lapachol. Pau d'arco works well in the formula because of its proven ability to help control Candida.35 This amazing herb also nourishes the body's defense system and helps protect against pathogenic organisms. It has been used for centuries to improve immune function, detoxify, and reduce pain throughout the body -- especially in the joints. Research has shown that it contains a natural antibacterial agent, has a healing effect on the entire body, cleanses the blood, and kills viruses. Pau d'arco has been used as a treatment for AIDS, allergies, all infections and inflammations, anemia, asthma, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, as a blood builder, bronchitis, all types of cancer,36 colitis, cystitis, smoker's cough, diabetes, eczema, fistulas, gastritis, gonorrhea, hemorrhages, hernias, Hodgkin's disease, liver disease, leukemia, lupus, multiple sclerosis, osteomyelitis, Parkinson's disease, polyps, prostatitis, psoriasis, rheumatism, skin cancer, skin sores, spleen infections, snake bites, ulcers, varicose veins, warts, and plain old wounds.
There is a hole in the chair/bed where the speculum and water come from. It is this same hole where all of the waste goes down. There is a view-tube beside you so that you can see everything that passes out of you. What surprised me was that after the initial “movement” (which was pretty standard) there was not that much that actually came out of me. No giant clumps the size of an orange, mostly just the clean water coming out exactly as it came in. After awhile, this made me anxious. Why wasn’t anything happening? Then, I had another smaller movement, but that was it for the length of the procedure. If anything else came out, it wasn’t visible. I had the expectation that something major would be removed and there would be a lot of movement over the course of the treatment. In retrospect, I think that having that expectation was detrimental. It caused me unnecessary anxiety during the process.
These “Frankenfoods” are loaded with artificial ingredients that have names you can’t even pronounce. And they’re missing one key ingredient – fiber. So they sit in your gut for days or even weeks, fermenting and rotting instead of digesting and providing nutrients. Constipation, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, bloating and weight gain are just some of the results.
