There is an old saying that “death begins in the colon.” This is an oversimplification, to be sure, but more accurate than not. In fact, the road to health begins with colon detoxing—pretty much no matter what the disease or problem. Unfortunately, most people confine their understanding of the colon detox to its effect on fecal matter. And while it is true that cleansing programs do draw old fecal matter out of the colon, limiting the discussion to this misses the big picture.
This step may not sound particularly appealing, but it can be extremely beneficial and very effective. Many colon therapists perform high colonics or irrigation procedures within their offices on a daily basis. Although the procedure can be quite uncomfortable and take a reasonable length of time, it does take a relatively simple course, so you can know what to expect. Firstly, the therapist will gently insert a tube into your rectum which is attached to a pump that pushes water into your large intestine. Once your colon has been completely saturated, the therapist will remove the initial tube and insert another, then massage your abdomen so that waste and water is expelled from your colon.
Dr. Jensen also described the problem associated with mucoid plaque (thickened intestinal mucus) as: "The heavy mucus coating in the colon thickens and becomes a host of putrefaction. The blood capillaries to the colon begin to pick up the toxins, poisons and noxious debris as it seeps through the bowel wall. All tissues and organs of the body are now taking on toxic substances. Here is the beginning of true autointoxication on a physiological level."
But constipation is a severe problem in the developed world. According to a 2007 study published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, the incidence of chronic constipation in the United States is just over 17 percent, or well over 50 million people.10 With a bowel movement once every five days (towards the low end definition of constipation), you're talking about 10 pounds of fecal matter stored in the colon -- at once every seven days it's 14 pounds. And statistically, we're still talking about several million people. So, my statement that 10--20 pounds is not as unusual as you might think, holds up…again, mathematically speaking. And let's keep in mind, these numbers assume that 100% of this stored fecal matter is evacuated from your bowels during your once a week movements -- a questionable assumption at best. As for the 65 pounds, I did say that has been reported "only in exceptional cases." The simple mathematical truth is that the concept of people storing pounds of fecal matter is not "false, false, false" as Dr. Carroll asserts; It's mathematically "true, true, true!"
To be sure, I've also read numerous emails from doctors who write into the Baseline of Health Foundation and say, "I've been doing colonoscopies for years, and I've never seen this mythical fecal matter." But think about this for a moment. What is every patient required to do the night before they get their colonoscopy? They are forced to drink a literal gallon of purgative to blow every last trace of fecal matter out of their colons. So doctors do not see large amounts of fecal matter, they see only the damage that fecal matter has left behind -- prolapsed colons, polyps, and diverticular disease for starters.
Apple cider vinegar has antioxidant and antibiotic properties that are quite beneficial for a healthy gut and colon (11). The antibiotic property of apple cider vinegar is due to the presence of a bacterium called acetobacter in it, which aids digestion and proper functioning of your gut. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar increases the acid level in your stomach, eliminates toxins, and helps you lose weight (12).
We want to make it clear that a full body detox can be achieved solely through colon cleansing foods. Supplements are always optional. However, for workaholics and soccer moms, a supplement like Digestive Refresh provides the same benefits minus the preparation and hassle. All of Digestive Refresh’s ingredients are all-natural; you’re not ingesting anything that has no business being in your body.
If you are not sure whether a colon cleanse problem is safe or advisable in your particular situation, the best thing you can do is talk to a doctor or health professional about what options you might have. It may seem a little embarrassing to have this conversation, but trust us when we say that they’ve heard it all before, and when it comes to anything in life, you should always put your health first. The last thing you want to do is start a colon cleanse in order to increase your wellbeing or weight loss chances, and find that you have simply made your situation worse.
Licorice root stimulates the production of digestive fluids and bile, soothes ulcers, helps reduce intestinal inflammation, and supports the healthy function of the kidneys, liver and bladder. Its action in soothing ulcers is unique. Rather than inhibiting the release of acid, licorice stimulates the normal defense mechanisms that prevent ulcer formation in the first place. Specifically, licorice improves both the quality and quantity of the protective substances that line the intestinal tract; increases the life span of intestinal cells; and improves blood supply to the intestinal lining.40

Cayenne does more than just adding some heat to your meals. It's a mucous dissolver and help loosen any mucous build up in the body. The stomach uses mucous and stomach acid to boost and ease digestions and cayenne may even fight symptoms of indigestion. It's not a coincidence that's it's one of the three things you're allowed to consume on the intense (and ludicrous!?!) Master Cleanse.
Leafy greens are nutrient powerhouses; spinach, kale, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, collard greens, leeks, peas are all rich in Chlorophyll which helps cleanse the intestinal tract and as a result soothes the colon. They also help detoxify the liver and protect the body from the toxins in the environment. You can boil or steam the veggies, add them in soups or slightly sauté with a little butter or olive oil.
These “Frankenfoods” are loaded with artificial ingredients that have names you can’t even pronounce. And they’re missing one key ingredient – fiber. So they sit in your gut for days or even weeks, fermenting and rotting instead of digesting and providing nutrients. Constipation, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, bloating and weight gain are just some of the results.
