Consider that a sluggish bowel can retain pounds of old toxic fecal matter (2--3 pounds is common, 10--20 pounds is not as unusual as you might think, and up to 65 pounds has actually been reported in exceptional cases). Constipation is no laughing matter. If you aren’t moving your bowels after every meal you eat, then you are, by definition, constipated. Your body has a reflex, known as the gastrocolic reflex, which stimulates movement in the colon when you start eating. The amount of food you eat and the temperature of your food and drinks affect the strength of this reflex. With high fat meals and cold drinks the reflex is stronger, producing a bowel movement more quickly. Caffeine and fructose may also speed up this reflex to the point of being uncomfortable. This is where Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) starts for many people.

As for exorcising dietary demons, any ‘evidence’ is likely to be psychosomatic. The head of Flinders University’s department of human physiology, Professor Simon Brookes, doesn’t dispute that some patients do feel lighter, or cleansed after a good ol’ rinse, but he pins it on a placebo effect. “…there is absolutely no medical evidence that it carries any benefits at all,” says Prof Brookes.

Like the open system, the closed system comes with the creature comfort of a massage table. The major differences with the closed system are that the procedure is totally controlled by a therapist, the tube is significantly larger (about the width of a 50 cent coin), and rather than a set amount of water, the therapist continues to pump water into the bowel until you indicate you can’t take in any more, which James says tends to be at about 40 litres.
Psyllium seeds and husks are rich in soluble fiber and have long been used to ease constipation and digestive system upset. As the University of Maryland Medical Center says, "Many well designed studies have shown that psyllium relieves constipation. When combined with water, it swells and produces more bulk, which stimulates the intestines to contract and helps speed the passage of stool through the digestive tract. Psyllium is widely used as a laxative in Asia, Europe, and North America."26 Studies show that in addition to increasing stool weight, supplementing with psyllium seed husk produces stools that are slick and gelatinous. Psyllium is unique in contrast with other viscous fibers. It is resistant to fermentation, whereas other soluble fibers tend to ferment in the colon. That's a significant advantage. Researchers also observed that psyllium seed gel provides lubrication that facilitates the propulsion of colon contents and produces a stool that is bulkier and moister than are stools produced when using comparable amounts of other bowel-regulating fiber sources. The bottom line is that studies have shown that an unfermented gel component of psyllium seed husk promotes laxation as a lubricant in humans.27 
Next, you need to make sure that you are properly hydrated. You have probably seen the various studies that have shown how important it is for us to get enough water on a regular basis, and this is even truer if you want to have the best colon cleanse. Drink several glasses of water every day that has been carefully filtered, as this will help to flush out the toxins that are already clinging within your system.
A healthy gut is the foundation of a healthy body. A diet high in refined carbohydrates and low in fibre reduces the number of friendly bacteria in the intestines, upsetting the balance of the body’s intestinal ecosystem. Yogurt, kefir and other fermented foods such as miso and sauerkraut can replenish friendly bacteria. Bifidobacteria are most numerous in the colon, while Lactobacilli prevail in the small intestine. These beneficial bacteria synthesize vitamins from food remnants, degrade toxins, prevent colonization of disease-causing micro- organisms, crowd out less beneficial bacteria, stimulate the immune system and produce short-chain fatty acids that provide an energy source for cells lining the colon.
Slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra) works with the body to draw out impurities and toxins, assisting with the healing of all body parts. It is beneficial for all inflammatory bowel conditions.39 And slippery elm's coating action soothes the irritated tissues of the intestines, colon, and urinary tract, as well as stomach ulcers. The primary chemical constituents of slippery elm are mucilage (galactose), starch, tannins, calcium, vanadium, and zinc.
In a colon regenerator, I recommend you look for a formula that contains all organic herbs such as: Psyllium seeds and husks, Apple pectin, Montmorillonite clay, Activated willow charcoal, Pau d'arco, Slippery elm inner bark, Marshmallow root, and Fennel seed. Licorice root stimulates the production of digestive fluids and bile, soothes ulcers, helps reduce intestinal inflammation, and supports the healthy function of the kidneys, liver and bladder. Its action in soothing ulcers is unique. Rather than inhibiting the release of acid, licorice stimulates the normal defense mechanisms that prevent ulcer formation in the first place. Specifically, licorice improves both the quality and quantity of the protective substances that line the intestinal tract; increases the life span of intestinal cells; and improves blood supply to the intestinal lining.40
During a colon cleanse, large amounts of water — sometimes up to 16 gallons (about 60 liters) — and possibly other substances, such as herbs or coffee, are flushed through the colon. This is done using a tube that's inserted into the rectum. In some cases, smaller amounts of water are used and are left to sit in the colon for a short time before being removed.
If you don’t have the time to follow the steps of colon cleansers that we have laid out for you, there are other options available on the market today. Colon cleansers come in a variety of different forms, including laxatives, high colonics, enemas, and pills. The way that they work is by helping your body to eliminate the harmful toxins that may have begun to build within your digestive tract. The idea behind regularly cleansing your colon is that it will assist your body in getting rid of all the unnecessary accumulated waste that has begun to build up over time. When slow foods stay within your digestive tract for a certain amount of time, your colon will begin to secrete mucous that literally keeps the toxins trapped within your system, along with clumps of undigested matter that can physically weigh you down.

Our bodies, including our digestive system, slow down in the evening hours as they prepare to rest and rejuvenate. When we put food into our stomachs late in the evening, there are fewer digestive enzymes available to facilitate proper digestion. This can result in undigested food sitting in your stomach for long periods of time, which can result in a disturbed sleep.
Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate. Its basic nature helps in balancing the pH of your stomach. Baking soda is one of the most commonly used home remedies to treat indigestion due to its laxative nature (28). When the baking soda solution enters the gut, it causes water to be pulled into the intestines by a process called osmosis. This softens the stool and increases its volume, thereby helping in cleansing your colon easily.
The following Q&A from our FAQ section on doing a Liver/Gallbladder cleanse addresses this issue. 13. I did not see stones in the toilet, why is that? We have heard from many people that they have seen "horrible" things floating in the toilet. But many notice nothing. That's not unusual. In many cases the stones are too small to notice -- or too few. Also, using the psyllium, which makes the elimination of waste much easier, tends to encapsulate and makes things harder to see. Another thing to keep in mind is that people often confuse the little "soap" beads that the body can make out of the olive oil as stones. On the other hand, the fact the body often produces "soap stones" doesn't mean that it isn't also flushing real gallstones. In the end, though, it's not what you see, it's how you feel. Wait for a few days after the cleanse and then evaluate. Do you feel lighter and cleaner? Is your breathing a little easier, less mucousy? Does food taste better? Etc. These are the tangible results you're after. Or if nothing else, were you able to break some bad eating habits or lose some of that extra weight you picked up over the holidays? That said, are you doing the stone softening program that Jon Barron recommends before doing your flush? This helps make the program more effective. Also, you refer to an apple juice flush. This makes me wonder if you are following a different version of the flush or protocol than we recommend on this site. If so, then you probably need to check with the people who recommend that protocol to figure out how to maximize its effectiveness.
Another great side effect of colon cleansers that can help your diet is the fact that it is capable of increasing your energy. Once the cleanse has released any toxins from your system, you may find that you feel rejuvenated, as the energy used to force waste through your intestines can now be utilized elsewhere. Many people who have experienced colon cleansers find that they sleep better, have more energy, and even experience improved circulation.

Flaxseeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants. The daily consumption of flaxseeds is a sure shot way to cleanse your colon due to the combined laxative effect of its compounds. While the omega-3s are wonderful for your overall health, the antioxidants and fiber in flaxseeds can help increase your bowel movements to get rid of all the toxins from your body (21), (22), (23).
If you were to eat a whole grain such as rice, it would produce stools that are full of fiber and loose. When you eat the same grain ground up (say, rice bread, for example) it produces stool that is much more compact like clay. Clay-like stools are harder and more difficult to pass, and the pressure they put on your system can lead to constipation.
Wolf said people's curiosity about cleansing possibly stems from the idea that the bowel is a dirty place, and that getting rid of waste is a good idea. She said she usually doesn't recommend colon hydrotherapy, but has suggested it for a few people to use as colonoscopy preparation when traditional methods have failed. She's also recommended it for patients who had severe constipation, before there were strong drugs that could help remedy this problem.
If you like the idea of "cleansing" your body, and of course, doing so safely, you need look no further than the produce and bulk food aisles of your local grocery store. Part of why so many people are plagued with a bloated, constipated feeling, the very feeling that leads them to consider colon cleansing, is a poor diet. Without proper nutrients, natural whole foods, and plenty of fiber and water, the digestive tract doesn't function optimally. 
Unless you’re among the small percentage of people who get regular colonics, that’s how much waste the average American adult has piling up in their intestines, and it can seriously affect your digestive health, as well as your weight loss. According to a 2016 study, the average American is getting more than 50% of their calories from ultra-processed foods, like sugary drinks from Starbucks, pizza, sodas like Coke and Pepsi, microwaveable meals, cookies, candy, fried chicken, greasy burgers and fries.
The bottom line is that it is unlikely the senna was responsible, and on top of that, I am not advocating anything close to the amount of senna consumed when drinking multiple cups of dieter's tea. In the colon corrective we're now talking about, senna, along with the aloe and cascara sagrada, are merely colon cleansing stimulants for proper colon function. No one has ever suffered a problem from them when used in that regard.

Chlorophyll does a lot of wonders for the human body. It’s useful as a digestive tract cleanse and may prevent colorectal cancer, according to a study. A chlorophyll enema, in fact, has become a health trend for this very reason. However, you don’t need to shove anything down your rectum to derive the same benefits that you can get from consuming green veggies.
Senna is widely accepted as a stool softener and a short-term treatment for constipation. Senna leaf is approved by the World Health Organization for use in occasional constipation. It is approved in the United States by the FDA and in European countries as an ingredient in over-the-counter and prescription laxative preparations. And it is approved by the German government for any condition in which alleviating constipation or softening stools is desirable. Senna may be recommended for people with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or those undergoing surgery involving the abdomen, anus, or rectum. Senna may also be used to clear the bowel in order to improve the visibility of abdominal organs during an ultrasound procedure.
If you do want to feel lighter or use colonic lavage as a kind of reset ritual, here’s what you need to know. First you’ll complete a comprehensive heath appraisal to ensure the procedure is appropriate for your health state and goals. Pre-procedure checks at credible clinics can involve testing urine for body hydration, pH levels and diabetes. Once you’re in the clear, weight and blood pressure are taken.
Aside from juice or vegetable-rich diets, there are other foods that are often included within a colon cleanse diet Whole grains are a good way to bulk up internal waste and help move it out of the system in a quick and efficient manner. This includes brown rice, sprouted wheat, and grains such as amaranth and quinoa that are easy to digest yet provide essential energy. It’s recommended when on a colon cleanse diet to stay away from excessive spices or too many ingredients. Raw, whole foods tend to be the best way to go for purifying and detoxifying your system.
Colon detoxing and intestinal cleansing are the foundation for other phases of the full body detox because if the intestinal tract (and drain pipe) is clogged, many of the toxins being dumped by your liver will back up into your bloodstream, making you feel very unwell, learn more. So, if you are going to do a full body detox, you must start here, with a colon cleanse.
