A gut cleanse is a necessary step in repairing a poor gut. Why? A good cleanse will replace foods that aggravate and compromise our gastrointestinal health with gut-friendly foods that do three things – ‘heal and seal’ the gastrointestinal tract; provide probiotics for healthy gut bacteria; and provide fibre for bowel health. Think of the gut like a car. A gut cleanse is like a service, and gut-friendly foods and supplements are like premium fuel.

The other claim sometimes made about herbal laxatives is that you become dependent on them to have a bowel movement. The evidence does not bear that out. Millions of people who did not have regular bowel movements before using colon cleansing products, have gone on natural colon cleansers, stayed on them for a number of months to build up colon function, and then weaned themselves off. The net result is that their colons are stronger and working better than before they started on the colon cleansing program. The trick is to wean yourself off, not stop abruptly. Just think how sensitive your colon is. Sometimes just taking a trip is enough to make you constipated. Your colon doesn't like abrupt changes.
In 1998, the FDA reclassified several herbal laxatives including senna, aloe, and cascara sagrada as category III, meaning they required further research. Research for senna proceeded, but no results or comments were forwarded to the FDA for aloe or cascara sagrada. As a result, in 2002, senna was once again listed as category I (approved for over-the-counter use), but aloe and cascara sagrada, despite hundreds of years of history and being driven by similar anthraquinones, are now listed as category II (insufficient data).14
Most people need to drink more water. Water is the universal solvent, and an insufficient amount of it causes constipation and toxicity in the bowel and kidneys. Physical activity, fever, hot or dry climates and consumption of meat and salty foods all increase the need for water. The optimal amount varies widely, usually from six to 10 glasses a day. One useful formula is to drink half your weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds (55 kilograms), drink 60 ounces (eight glasses/two litres) of water per day. This can include pure water, herb tea or diluted fruit juices. Caffeinated beverages do not count because they are dehydrating. The best time to drink a glass of water is between meals or 20 minutes or more before eating; sip only small amounts with a meal. An important rule is: When thirsty, drink water not pop or other beverages.
Like the open system, the closed system comes with the creature comfort of a massage table. The major differences with the closed system are that the procedure is totally controlled by a therapist, the tube is significantly larger (about the width of a 50 cent coin), and rather than a set amount of water, the therapist continues to pump water into the bowel until you indicate you can’t take in any more, which James says tends to be at about 40 litres.
Probiotic foods are fermented foods that contain beneficial bacteria. They tend to have a slightly (or intense) sour taste and are also known for helping to curb cravings! Try sauerkraut, kimchi, natural yogurt and kefir! These foods help populate the gut with more good bacteria, giving our gut a stronger fighting power and ability to function well. It's also a good idea to take a probiotic supplement. Switch up the brand (and strains of bacteria) from time to time to give your body a variety of bacteria.

Foods lacking in fiber move through the digestive tract at one-quarter the pace of high-fiber choices. This slow-moving food produces excess mucous that literally sticks to the intestinal walls, weighing the intestinal tract down with pounds of decaying fecal matter. Colon cleansing has the potential to aid weight loss; some people claim to have lost up to 20 pounds over the course of a month. The average human colon weighs about four pounds empty and can hold up to eight meals' worth of food before digestion finally occurs. A colon cleansing can result in significant weight loss and kick-start your metabolism, as well as refocus your attention on better food choices and whole-body wellness.
Marshmallow root (Althea officinalis) is particularly rich in mucilage and gets extremely gooey when wet, which makes it a great demulcent and emollient. This quality makes it particularly valuable for coating and protecting irritated mucous membranes in the mouth, throat, lungs,37 and, for our purposes in this formula, the gastrointestinal tract. It is used in this formula for treating inflammation and irritation of the alimentary canal--as well as to help regenerate the epithelial cells that line the intestinal tract.38 The active biochemicals in marshmallow are large carbohydrate (sugar) molecules, which make up the mucilage. This smooth, slippery substance can soothe and protect irritated mucous membranes throughout the body. Marshmallow has been known to relieve indigestion, kidney problems, urinary tract infections, and even external skin wounds such as boils and abscesses.
